Atlantis Wins Cape Fear!

Over the weekend of June 22-23 the Atlantis Women competed in the 28 team women's division at Cape Fear 7s in Wilmington, North Carolina. In Saturday pool play the team earned victories over Frederick 52-0, Souther Pines 38-5, and James River 50-0 to book a spot in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

The quarterfinal match was a 36-0 victory over the hosts, Cape Fear, followed by an extra-time 19-14 win over a talented Badger Academy side. The Championship match was against the DC Furies, a very strong club that features a D1 15s side as well as a 7s side that competes for Nationals in the MAC qualifiers. Atlantis was able to put together another solid performance to earn a 32-5 victory and win the tournament championship.

The roster featured an incredible 9 Atlantis players making their debuts, bolstered by the veteran presences of Karen Backenstose, Christelle Alce and Gabby Wood who made their Atlantis debuts previously.

Karen Backenstose (868)

Bella Byrne (1922)

Supporting the team was a talented staff that included Robert Sanderson (Head Coach), Perry Pence and Joe Bentz (Assistant Coaches), Sarah Sall (Physio), and sponsor Bob Bogen.

When she wasn't attending to her Physio duties, Sarah Sall took some photos during the weekend which can be found on our Facebook page.

Atlantis Rugby would like to give all of the people involved in this weekend a big thanks for another great trip! Best of luck to the players, and their home clubs, for the remainder of the summer season!
